"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile fans have also coveted the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly depict them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to form a group."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics follow departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence required a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

But the band will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
