A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But these probabilities had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in positions just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
