Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing those documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little new information.
